Start By:

  1. Connect the steering frame lock.

  2. Release the system pressure.

  3. Remove the drive shaft.

  4. Remove the drive chains.

  5. Remove the differential lock valve.

  6. Remove the rear tires.


NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat® products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.


  1. Drain the oil from the rear axle into a suitable container for storage or disposal. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Transmission and Differential Oil - Change".

  2. Remove guards (1).

  3. Disconnect hose assembly (2). Remove bolts (3) in order to remove tube assemblies (4) and (5).

  4. Remove bolts (8) and remove plate assemblies (9). Remove bolts (7) and remove plate (6).

  5. Attach suitable lifting device to tandem assembly (10). The weight of tandem assembly (10) is approximately 798 kg (1760 lb).

  6. Remove bolts (11) and tandem assembly (10).

  7. Repeat Steps 1 through 6 for the opposite side of the machine.

  8. Remove O-ring seal (12). Repeat this step for opposite side of machine.

  9. Remove tube assembly (13). Disconnect hose assembly (15). Disconnect hose (14). Remove hose (17). Remove tube assembly (16).

  10. Disconnect hose assembly (18).

  11. Remove panel (19). Repeat this step for the opposite side of the machine.

  12. Attach Tooling (A), Tooling (B), and suitable lifting devices onto rear axle, differential, and final drive (20). The weight of rear axle, differential, and final drive (20) is approximately 1090 kg (2400 lb). Repeat this step for the opposite side of the machine.

  13. Position Tooling (C) under rear axle, differential, and final drive (20) in order to support the differential housing.

  14. Remove bolts (21) and remove plate (22). Repeat this step for the opposite side of the machine.

  15. Remove bolts (23). Repeat this step for the opposite side of the machine.

  16. Remove bolts (25) and reposition bracket assembly (24). Remove four bolts (26) (not shown).

  18. Remove rear axle, differential, and final drive (20) from the machine.
